Symptoms of Avoidant Personality Disorder

Avoidant personality disorder is characterized by extreme feeling of inadequacy and ineptness at social places which triggers social inhibition. A person suffering from avoidant personality disorder shows various signs which points towards its inner complex state of personality. Such person has strong inferiority complex and avoid every social contact for short term or for long period to keep him from embracing by others. The signs of avoidant personality disorder are discussed here briefly. Let’s have a look over them to understand the reality of this complex mental illness.

1- Extreme Feeling of Inadequacy

The main symptom of avoidant personally disorder is having extreme feeling of inadequacy in every respect. Such person deliberately avoids meeting people, taking part in group activities, developing good relations with other and sharing their views and feeling with anyone just because of having such abnormal feeling of inadequacy which seems to be blocking their social contacts and personal skills.

2- Preoccupation with Rejection and Disapproval

Feeling of being nothing or having flaws in personality makes a person preoccupied with rejection and disapproval. Whenever he thinks about doing something the negative or daunting thoughts of being ridiculed or rejected by others discouraged him badly and he leaves thinking about it completely. This thing further makes him more inferior personality in his own view.

3- Avoid Close Relationships

A person with inferiority complex and with a fear of being ridiculed by others mostly avoids developing close relation with anyone. He thinks that such close relation will cause to expose the hidden defects of his personality before someone else and he or she will dislike or reject him ridiculously. To avoid such negative outcome of any relation such person prefers not to make any relation at all.

4- Reluctant to Take Personal Responsibility about Anything

Think that when a person is not considering him capable of developing relations and doing anything appropriately then how he can accept the responsibility of achieving or fulfilling anything. This thing make him reluctant at the moments when everybody has to do his own work and has to perform his own duty just like in case of completing college assignments and fulfilling professional responsibilities etc.

5- Oversensitivity about Negative Comments

A person suffering from avoidant personality disorder shows overreaction and over sensitivity on what people think about him. Such person takes each and every word very seriously spoken about his personality. Such person also notices the gestures or short comments of people pointing towards him. Sometimes these comments or criticism is of no importance but for the patient of avoidant personality disorder it would be a serious issue to think over for several weeks or for several months.

6- Avoid Social Gathering

Avoidant personality disorder makes a person hesitant to attend any social gathering because of having strong feeling of being inept and unappealing to others. Such persons have fear that their outlook, talk or expressions will make them a centre of criticism and will cause negative remarks by others about their personal inabilities.

All these signs of avoidant personality disorder start manifesting in early adulthood and increase in intensity if left untreated. So if your child or any other loved ones is showing the symptoms of extreme social avoidance and overacting upon criticism as compared to normal minded person then it means that he is suffering from the complicated mental problem of avoidant personality disorder.
